SAPA

Sapa is a picturesque mountain town in Lào Cai Province, northern Vietnam, about 320 km from Hanoi. Perched at 1,500–1,650 meters above sea level, it’s known for its cool climate, mist-covered scenery, and colorful ethnic minority communities. The area is surrounded by the Hoàng Liên Son mountain range, home to Vietnam’s highest peak, Fansipan.

How to Get There

From Hanoi

Overnight train to Lào Cai (8–9 hours) + 1-hour bus or taxi to Sapa

Sleeper bus (6–7 hours) — faster but less scenic than the train

Private car/van (5–6 hours) for more comfort

From China

Cross at the Lào Cai border from Yunnan Province, then travel to Sapa by road.

Best Time to Visit

March–May: Spring flowers, mild weather, and clear views

September–November: Golden rice terraces and harvest season

December–February: Cold, misty, sometimes with frost or light snow

Avoid heavy rains in June–August if you want dry trekking conditions.
